NUJ Pensioners

Dear brothers and sisters,

A motion passed at ADM called for a feasibility study on building a union wide pensioners/retired members organisation including holding a biennial delegate meeting.

To that end you will have received a questionnaire from head office asking for the details, activities and interest of your pensioner/retired members in such a project.

The replies to the questionnaire were positive and encouraging but unfortunately many branches did not return the questionnaire - in view of these two facts the head office is repeating the exercise.

May I in a personal capacity urge branch officers and members to at least fill in the questionnaire even if you have no great detail to submit - Please don't let this go by default.

Fraternally,

Roy Jones

Converting from Print Journalism to Broadcasting Course

Venue: Glasgow Metropolitan College

One night per week for 10 weeks

Date to be confirmed
Cost of course: £130

Fancy being on the wireless? Want another string to your bow? Need some back-to-basics broadcast training?

An introduction to broadcast journalism is a ten-week evening course designed to give print journalists a taste of the electronic media, but should also be useful to new recruits to radio and television newsrooms, by reinforcing their on-the-job training.

It's strictly hands-on, building through a series of practical exercises and culminating in the joint production of a news magazine programme.

You'll get experience of news writing and news reading, broadcast interviews, using your voice as a tool, microphone technique, working in a radio studio and basic digital editing.
The classes are taken by Colin Adams, an award-winning broadcaster and journalist and an experienced teacher and trainer.

If you want to register for the course please email Angela Austin, NUJ Assistant Organiser - angela.nuj@btinternet.com or telephone 0141 944 7031.

Please support lobby for a sacked trades unionist

Rhetta Moran is a trades unionist and researcher who has been sacked after six years working for Salford University.

Rhetta's colleagues, students, and supporters believe that she has been targeted for the chop because her research into refugee issues, covered in local and national media, was uncomfortable for the political establishment. We are asking people to spread the word about - and come to - the next NUJ support lobby. Please bring banners and placards on:
Thursday 22nd September, between 8am and 10.30am,

Faraday House, Research and Graduate College, Crescent, Salford M6 6AP
Rhetta, a member of the National Union of Journalists and the Association of University Teachers, has already attended three internal hearings about her dismissal and there will be at least one more at which the university will have the chance to right the wrongs done by reinstating her.

If you haven't already, please send an email to the vice chancellor Micheal Harloe at m.harloe@salford.ac.uk, cc rhetta.moran@ntlworld.com asking for Rhetta's reinstatement.

If you have written to Prof Harloe - but have received no reply - please send a polite reminder asking for the courtesy of a reply.

Thanks
