Jack and Steve meet Sergie at branch meeting

Jack Foley and Steve Jarvis were both awarded life long union members last night at the Glasgow Branch meeting.
Last night was also special as Sergie Guz of the Independent Media Union of Ukraine addressed the meeting.
Below are some pictures from last night.

Two veteran campaigners won a standing ovation at a meeting of the union's Glasgow branches for service between them of over 80 years. Jack Foley and Steve Jarvis were their usual irreverent selves as they received NUJ life membership from Scottish Organiser Paul Holleran.
He said: "You will all be aware of the fun, cantankerous behaviour and good craic coming from these two characters, despite ill health in recent years."
Jack Foley was an activist on the Daily Record in the battles with Robert Maxwell and the Mirror group overjobs and union recognition. After being
made redundant from both the Record and the Evening Times he helped set up the union's acclaimed professional training programme in Scotland. "it would be fair to say the project would not be the success it is now without Jack," Paul Holleran said,
Steve Jarvis was FoC at the Evening Times and later joined the Record. He said that Jack Foley had been a sub at the Record when he arrived: "He was a great inspiration to me and I have proudly gone on to cause trouble wherever I have been."
Jack Foley replied: "I was probably the worst FoC that the Record ever had but we did negotiate the best ever house agreement while I was there somehow."

The Glasgow branch meeting got a taste of press freedom Ukraine style as Sergei Goos, secretary of the Independent Media Trade Union of Ukraine (IMTUU) told the story of the extreme conditions in which the fledgling organisation has grown.
After only four years, the initial group of 47 journalists seeking an independent union has expanded to 1,500 and the IMTUU is a full affiliate of the International Federation of Journalists.
Sergei Goos said journalists faced threats and violence as well as corruption and bribery, with money in envelopes for those who did not challenge the ruling elite, Such bribes kept pay low, tempting journalists to toe the line.
Sergei Goos was on a ten-day tour organised by NUJ members who have taken part in a four-year. More than a dozen have been to Ukraine to take part in union training courses.
During the tour Sergei Goos also went to union meetings in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol, staying in members' homes.
As he left London Sergei Hoos said: "it has been an inspiring visit. I have learnt so much about how to organise a journalists' union from the NUJ and I have made so many friends, We hope to see more of your members next time in Kyiv."
