Re-Elect John Fray Deputy General Secretary

As Deputy General Secretary I've worked to maintain good working relationships right across the union. We now need to build on the unity I have helped to create.

Over 200 named supporters (see www.johnfray.org), believe that the NUJ still needs my experience to make sure that the union is always focused on our ability to help members whenever they need it.

The other three candidates may have many good qualities, but they lack real experience of the work they will be expected to carry out as DGS. Ask yourself this: if you have a problem do you want someone to advise you with virtually no experience, or a professional trade union official who has dealt with employment problems for over twenty years and has successfully negotiated across all sectors of the union?

I'm proud that I've represented thousands of NUJ members collectively and individually and that I have been an active trade unionist all my working life.

As the Deputy General Secretary for the last five years I've helped build our collective strength.

This must continue with more recognition campaigns that lead to the consolidation of house agreements containing good salaries and conditions, with negotiating and procedural rights built in.

The union must ensure that membership continues to grow to maintain a strong financial base.

John Fray

I will work to strengthen our chapels. Our strength will be demonstrated when we can substantially improve all our members' terms and conditions through workplace negotiations.

I want to develop high quality training for our chapel and branch representatives. Trained M/FoCs, able to work in conjunction with an increasing number of full-time organisers, will play a vital role in the future.

Our union is a campaigning union, which has done so much to improve employment legislation.

The Dave Wilson ruling at the European Court of Human Rights was a major breakthrough for employees threatened at work because of their union membership. It took a long time to achieve, but the NUJ stuck to the task. We must always keep arguing for what we believe is right.

As DGS I want to make sure that we have the resources to make sure our voice is heard and listened to. That includes a modern office for Scotland and another Assistant Organiser.

The spirit of optimism among NUJ activists and staff is stronger than anyone can remember and I've played a key part in building that mood. Most importantly I have proved that I work well with General Secretary Jeremy Dear.

Together we can make sure the NUJ remains stable and becomes even more effective in the future.

I now ask for your vote so that I can continue to work for the NUJ as the Deputy General Secretary.

"Vote John Fray your number 1 - he has my vote"
