The Guerin Principles

On 26th June 1996, the Irish journalist and NUJ member, Veronica Guerin was murdered as she waited at traffic lights in her car.

She had fought to expose Dublin's criminal underworld and the drug trafficking that was causing such devastation to communities despite being threatened and brutally beaten.

On 9th October 1996, at a Dublin seminar entitled, Seek the Truth, the following principles were established and named in her honour.

They have since been adopted by the National Union of Journalists, which regularly reaffirms its commitment to them.

The existence of a fair, free and independent media is essential to democracy.
The state must ensure that a constitutional and legislative environment exists to facilitate freedom of expression and free media.
Media organisations must continue to provide the resources necessary for investigative journalism.
Media workers resolve to resist any attempts at intimidation in whatever form and from whatever quarter.
