Glasgow takes firm stance on G8 reporting

At the January branch meeting, there was discussion on a potential proposal to ADM, in anticipation of the G8 summit at the Gleneagles Hotel, that the NUJ affiliate to the G8 alternatives and/or take part in/responsibility for running the press centre for the counter-summit.

After arguments were put forward outlining possible implications and risks for NUJ members, particularly freelance members who could be seen to be participants in (rather than observers of) events at the G8 summit, the branch decided to explicitly instruct the branch committee and ADM delegation to reject any such motions.

A motion to the following effect was passed unanimously:

The Glasgow branch rejects any motions calling on the branch to affiliate to the G8 Alternatives and instructs the branch committee and ADM delegation to reject any motions calling for affiliation to the G8 Alternatives or active participation in the G8 Alternatives or counter-summit.
