Armed by the Act, spilling state secrets
The NUJ is to host a special debate to mark the launch of the new book, Your Right to Know, How to Use the Freedom of Information Act, by Heather Brooke (published this month by Pluto Press).

The Freedom of Information Act, which came into force on 1st January 2005, offers journalists new opportunities to question how those in power use it.

The debate on the subject: "The public's right to know versus the state's right to snoop" will be held at the NUJ offices at Headland House.

Speakers will include former BBC defence correspondent
Andrew Gilligan, Tony Bunyan, director of Statewatch, a former MI5 officer Annie Machon, Simon Davies of Privacy International and Heather Brooke, Your Right to Know’s author.

Thursday January 20, 6.30 pm, at the NUJ Head Office,
308 Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8DP (near King's Cross station).
