Jailed NUJ member needs your help

NUJ member Amardeep Bassey, the investigations editor of the Trinity Mirror-owned Birmingham Sunday Mercury, has been in jail in Pakistan for 12 days. He was arrested on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border for a minor breach of passport regulations.

Amardeep was born in Wolverhampton but his family
are Indian and he has been questioned about spying for the Indian government.
I have met Amardeep. I can vouch for the fact that he is a genuine journalist who was on a genuine assignment.

He needs our help. Please send the model letters below. One to the Pakistan High Commission in London, and the other to an advisor to the President. The addresses are on the letters. You can email the embassy on pareplondon@supanet.com or fax 0207 664 9225. You can fax the President's man on 0092 5192 71682. Please do it today and ask colleagues to join in.

Dubious moves in support of Cuba

The Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign announces the return of Club Cubana. Described by the promoters as "Salsa with a little twist of everything the world has to offer... and an atmosphere unmatched by any other club," all profits go to the SCSC. Club Cubana is held at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow from 10 pm to 3 am on the first Friday of every month up to and including September 2002. Tickets are £4.00.

Our sources advise us that even a late plea from former US President, Jimmy Carter, could not persuade President Bush to attend until Cuha has held free and fair elections. The NUJ is affiliated to the Cuba Solidarity Campaign.

Meetings move back to Thursdays
It was decided, at the April branch meeting, that meetings should be moved to Thursdays.

Meetings had been held on Tuesday evenings on a trial basis to try to attract more members. However, it was generally agreed that this had not been achieved and a number of active members found Tuesdays inconvenient.
