Death threats in Guatemala

Death threats have been made against 11 journalists and human rights workers in Guatemala, allegedly because of their efforts to investigate disappearances at the hands of the country's military.

Amnesty International have made the case the focus of their latest "Urgent Action" appeal, requesting that people write to the relevant authorities expressing their concerns. Past letter writing campaigns have resulted in numerous governments releasing or acting to protect those who have been wrongly imprisoned, tortured, threatened or attacked.

Full details of the case and addresses to write to can be downloaded from the links below.

IMPORTANT: Please read Amnesty's Letter Writing Guide before responding to this appeal.

Special meeting on freelance issues

NUJ Freelance Organiser, John Toner, has kindly accepted an invitation to Scotland later this month and agreed to hold a special meeting on freelance issues.

The most urgent item he needs to talk to members about is the negotiations with the BBC on its copyright grab on radio talks and features. The NUJ has been negotiating on this for four years and is seeking the support of members for the position it has taken.

It is also an opportunity to discuss other freelance issues with the union's Freelance Organiser along with members of the Scottish Executive Council. The meeting will be held at the STUC offices in Woodlands Road, Glasgow on Friday June 28 at 3pm.

All NUJ members are invited, and indeed encourage, to attend.
