There
was an encouraging turn-out at the September branch
meeting with several new members contributing to
the highest attendance for several months.
A
number of important items of business were discussed
with the resignation of Jim Knox as Branch Secretary
being of primary note. A new election for Secretary
will be on the agenda for the October meeting.
The
Scottish Organiser's report relayed details of considerable
activity, most notably at the Daily Record and The
Scotsman Newspapers. There were encouraging successes
but the situation remains potentially volatile.
Also, SMG's announcement that they intend to sell
The Herald, Sunday Herald and Evening Times points
to an increasingly unstable position at Scotland's
major titles.
Training
continues to be a success with the NUJ. A number
of media organisations have now approached the training
office with a view to the NUJ carrying out all of
their in-house QuarkXpress training. At the current
rate of progress, the NUJ in Scotland will soon
be the country's industry leader in professional
training.
A
report was also given from Rory MacLeod, who was
part of the NUJ delegation to the Trades Union Congress.
This was extremely successful and all of the NUJ's
motions were passed. The General Secretary, Jeremy
Dear, was also elected to the TUC General Council,
giving the NUJ two members.
Jeremy
Dear will be visiting Scotland in October and will
address the Glasgow branch meeting. Members from
other branches are to be officially invited, and
this is a good opportunity to remind members that
they can attend any meeting. Technically, members
can only speak at another branch meeting if invited
to do so.
We
also hope to award a number of Life Memberships
at the October meeting and the membership department
has been asked to forward details of qualifying
branch members.
October
will also see the final submission of nominations
and motions for the Annual Delegates Meeting, which
will be held, in Llandudno from 2-5 March 2003.
Members
are reminded that the branch is always keen to encourage
attendance and participation at meetings and in
branch activity.
